Mechanical Propane Cannon – Efficient and Cost-effective

The mechanical propane cannon Zon Mark 4 is the most widely used bird scarer cannon in the world. The device uses propane gas to produce loud blasts that scare birds away.

The cannon is very easy to operate. Simply connect a standard (5 gallon) propane tank to the cannon’s gas inlet and set the gas regulator to the desired blast interval, ranging from 30 seconds up to 30 minutes. Once the gas is started and the settings are adjusted, the mechanical propane cannon can be left unattended, as it will automatically detonate at the predetermined intervals.

The blast volume of the propane cannon ranges from 100 to 125 decibels. The sound level can be easily modified by adjusting the telescopic inner barrel of the cannon, with the fully collapsed barrel providing the lowest sound and the fully extended one emitting the loudest noise.

A single 5-gallon propane tank produces around 17.000 detonations, which makes this efficient device a cost-effective solution for bird control. The cannon is also weatherproof and durable.

Recommended accessories

A timer is an essential accessory for mechanical propane cannon, enabling it to operate automatically during the desired hours and not continuously throughout the day and night. The use of the timer prevents excessive noise and disturbance to neighbouring properties while achieving the intended goal of deterring pest birds.

Utilizing a timer helps conserve propane gas and increase the lifespan of the cannon. By operating only during the designated hours, the propane cannon consumes less gas than it would if it were to run continuously. Similarly, the timer prevents the device from experiencing unnecessary wear and tear.

The Zon Timer is efficient and easy to use, requiring only one AA battery to operate for an entire season. It is also straightforward to install – it simply needs to be connected to the gas hose between the cannon and propane tank.

A rotating tripod is another useful add-on to the mechanical propane cannon. First and foremost, the tripod raises the cannon above the ground level, which guarantees greater coverage. By being positioned at 4 feet above the ground, the cannon can cover a much larger area.

Moreover, upgrading the cannon with a tripod also gives the device 360 degrees coverage. The cannon rotates approximately 60 degrees with each blast, allowing it to cover a full circle and providing comprehensive defence against all unwanted birds. The tripod also makes it easy to position the cannon in different locations and at various angles.

Frequently asked Questions

Is the mechanical propane cannon efficient?

Mechanical propane cannon is a highly efficient device for scaring off pest birds. The cannons are commonly used in agricultural settings but also in airports to deter birds from interfering with aircraft.

The loud, sudden noise produced by the cannon startles birds and prompts them to leave the area. Additionally, propane cannons are cost-effective, require minimal maintenance, and are easy to operate.

Can birds get used to the propane cannon?

Birds have exceptional hearing abilities, and they are continuously scanning their environment for possible threats. The sound of a propane cannon is loud and sudden and can cause significant distress to them.

While birds may get used to some man-made sounds, such as traffic noise in cities, they are less likely to acclimatise to the sudden sounds produced by propane cannons. However, as an additional measure to keep birds from habituating to the cannon, it is advisable to change its position every now and then.

Does the mechanical propane cannon have any drawbacks?

Albeit effective, propane cannons are very loud, which can cause a disturbance to nearby communities. The loud noise can cause stress in people and lead to complaints from neighbours.

Proper placement and use of the cannon, along with consideration for surrounding areas, are crucial to minimising its negative impacts.

What is the coverage area of this mechanical propane cannon?

The coverage area of Zon Mark 4 propane cannon is 1–5 acres depending on the topography of the area and on how the device is used. For instance, placing the cannon above the ground level on the tripod will increase the coverage area.
